Here we are at the beginning of the 21st Century and the evidence is out there. Spraying all these pesticides on the very foods we consume seems to be the accepted norm. Monsanto has even genetically modified corn to contain glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup. They have isolated this compound from a bacterium in the soil and through genetic modification have injected this gene into various plants that we as humans use as main foodsources.
What this in effect has done is to make the actual crop resistant to Roundup. Spray as much as you want on the crop and it does not seem to harm the crop. But, as in corn, after you harvest the ears of corn, what is left over, the majority of plant matter, is literally infested with the poison. As the plant matter is tilled under (normal farming practice) and begins it's breakdown, it in effect poisons the very soil it is rotting in. That in turn, leaches into the groundwater, streams, lakes and basically the environment. Not to even mention what is in the ears that we eat!
Glyphosate has been proven to be a carcinogen to animal tissue. We then unknowingly (or uncaringly) consume fish, plants and anything else organic that comes into contact with this poison. And yet, because of Corporate power, this fact is ignored by those that are supposed to be protecting and furthering the development of society...our leaders! Why? Well, in reality, it's all about the mighty dollar.
This GMO-ed corn is only the tip of the iceberg. Corporations have become the overbloated, overpowerful and health stealing nemesis of our society. They can lay the little farmer and consumer to waste all in the name of profits. $$$ "Profits uber alles".
This is capitalism at it's worst...period. It's like the company store of old . . . when a town grew up around a certain industry and the only place you could get anything you needed was through the company owned store. "Buy it here, pay our price or don't buy it!" And people had no choice, because there were no other choices. To me, that is no more than a monopoly. A dictatorship of consumer items.
We don't have a free market when everyone else is either bought off or driven out of business because of the power of 'Big'. Big money, big power, big man (bullying anyone?). How is this fair? Free market means competition, and fair competition. I have seen this corporatization in almost every market out there.... ski industry, food, clothing. The fewer choices that consumers have, the more the corporations move towards that old 'Company Store' mentality.
Until people start to stand up and say 'Enough is enough', the overall health of our very existence is in jeopardy. They (corps) cover up their evil doings through interaction with our elected leaders . . . 'lobbying'. Or in my opinion, 'legal bribery'. They rape the planet, poison vast resources and sweep it under the rug, while the complacent populace is distracted by lies, lies if told enough begin to be accepted as 'truth'.
Many in today's society treat those that question these practices, as nutcases. < fingers in ears .... la la la la la > The public can't seem to grasp the fact that these greedy power-mongers would ever do such a thing. Well, believe it and the present condition of our planet attests to this basic rape. When approximately 1% of the planet's population owns 90% of the wealth, that in itself shows a total imbalance.
And this only represents the 'free' peoples of the planet. What about all the third world countries, where knowledge seeking is replaced by survival instincts. They're worse off. I don't claim to know the answers, I can just see it's not on the road we're presently on. Change needs to come, but only when people wake up and start doing something .... buy local, support 'Mom and Pop' industries that compete fairly through their quality and not quantity. I've said enough ... change starts with the consumer and on a small scale . . . as the snowball that rolls downhill, gaining momentum and strength. Become aware, come together and turn off that damned propaganda machine!
